Why is my tape player squeaking?

professionaltrumpeter asked:

Sometimes when playing tapes, my tape player in my car will start to squeak, then stop, then squeak more, then stop, then squeak forever. the music’s still playing, but you can barely make it out. however, the tape itself is fine, and sometimes will work ok if i wait a bit. What is the cause of this problem & is there any way to fix it?

Note: please do not tell me to get a CD/mp3 player. my car is a piece & i’m not putting any money into it.
Thanks to all those who answered seriously. I’m almost positive it is the deck itself, not the tape & not the speakers. If it is indeed a slipping belt, would i just have to get a new tape player?

Tapes themselves can squeak. If you’ve played these in other players and they don’t, then it could indeed be the player. A slipping belt might possibly squeak. Does the squeak come from the player itself or the speakers? That would make a difference.

Cleaning the capstan, pinch roller and rubber wheel and play head with denatured alcohol won’t hurt a thing and may stop your problem.

I have the same problem and would love someone to help me out. the squeak in my case comes from the tape deck, not the speakers, and it is without doubt the tape deck and not the tape. The tape deck was an expensive one back in the day, but now just a relic. I prefer using the tape deck to CD player because I can use a tape deck adapter which works well with my ipod, the adapter seems to work much better than a transmitter because I don’t get interference. . . well, I do now, it’s a squeaky annoying sound that comes and goes when it wishes… can anyone help?
