Where can I find a good place to buy bass guitars?

asap asked:

I recently decided to buy a bass guitar, but I never played a bass guitar before. Does anyone know what type of bass guitar would be good for a beginner? And if so, where can I find one at?

One thing to keep in mind when purchasing your first bass guitar, or any guitar for that matter is how easy it is to play, and also your handsize. A guitar that does not feel comfortable to you is one you wont want to practice on and learn. My suggestion would be to take someone with you who has played for quite sometime, and have them help you purchase it. Keep in mind that while a salesman might make a suggestion as to what to buy, it might not be in your best interest. Alot of them are going to look at their commission factor in this, and while 2 different brands might sell for the same price, his commission might be higher on one. I would also not advise buying one mail order to start out, unless you are planning on buying a very high end guitar, where the quality is very consistent in every model they make. Alot of times in the lower end guitars, 2 identical looking guitars can be worlds apart in their fit and finish, set up, and how well the frets are set and dressed on the neck. Find a seasoned bass player, and ask him to help you out. Might cost you lunch to do it, but it will be worth it in the end. By the way, Peavey makes a very quality bass at a reasonable price. Ive played Peavey for years, and currently own 5 and 6 string Cirrus basses. Ibanez is another that makes a decent bass on the low end scale. My personal opinion on Squire is to stay away from those, as ive seen to many with serious problems arise in a very short time.
