When talking about bass guitars, what does it mean when they say the action is low or high?

zombie_genocider asked:

So what I’m getting at is, what is “action”?

Action refers to how high or low the string are off of the neck. A :high” actions means that there is a big gap between the strings and the neck.

the action is the distance from the strings to the fretboard

low action would mean you barely have to press to make a clean note
