There was some kind of deal a while back on a player by Initial or Insignia (?) for about $100, but it’s back up to something like $330.
At the moment, the cheapest way is to get a Blu-ray drive for your computer. Under $200. You need a fairly fast computer and a video card with hardware acceleration for the HD video formats, like an Nvidia 8500. An ATI card might be a better choice, since some of those support HDMI audio as well.

I have heard after Christmas 2008 or January 2009. Not that the players will be cheap then but they should drop by about $100. I won’t be getting one myself until prices fall to about $120. This may never happen but I’m hopeful.
Also the prices of movies should drop a bit too after Christmas. Nothing is going to drop before then. The simple lack of competition (thanks Toshiba!) is what is keeping the prices so high.

That’s complete rubbish, the average price of a player has dropped since Toshiba left the game. Let’s leave the FUD out of it, you think 5 years from now that the cheapest Blu-ray player still won’t have hit $120?
The Magnavox at Wal*Mart is currently the cheapest player and it’s $298. It’s profile 1.1 compatible. You should see $199 on outgoing models this year from Sony and Samsung and $199 on several models at Black Friday.
As for movie titles, Amazon probably has the best day-to-day prices. I’ve got over 120 Blu-ray Discs and I’ve paid around $15 for most of them. Sure there are titles like Close Encounters that I’ll pay more for, and The Godfather Trilogy in 1080p24 with TrueHD is well worth $90, but don’t look to see drastic reductions in pricing. The studios are looking to avoid the bare bones discs and bargain bins moving forward with Blu-ray. The average new release right now is varying from $17.95 to $27.95 and the MSRP is often within $1-$5 of the 2-disc DVD set.
Be a smart shopper and your wallet won’t get burned.

The problem is not the cheap Blu-Ray player it’s the software at $25 – $39.00 per disc .
Also a large majority of the discs are mastered from the same standard definition DVD’s .
Large numbers of people are not going to buy into Blu-Ray until the prices come down .
