Is it safe to go backwards on an Elliptical Trainer?

sylar6543 asked:

I’m currently alternating between forwards and backwards motion on an elliptical trainer every 5 minutes, so it’s half and half. Is that good or bad? Should I be doing less backwards? Is it even worth it?

Most elipticals I’ve seen have a reverse mode on them.

Yes they are definitely safe to go backwards on. They work out different muscles

I know going backwards will work different muscles. I have not heard it is bad in any way. I am not an expert here, but I do not think the machines would be made with it if it were bad. My fitness center just got new equipment a few weeks ago and they all have the reverse. I think your workout sounds great and I think it will benefit you.
