Do taxi cabs have special GPS systems that take long routes on purpose?

gwiz20002002 asked:

I mean taxi drivers make money based on how long the trip is right? So wouldn’t it make sense if their GPS systems were a little “tweaked”

Most taxi drivers don’t use GPS. They already know the route. But sometimes, they know that certain routes might be shorter but get tied up with traffic at certain times of the day. In that case, they might go a longer route, but arrive in a shorter time.

    NO

It’s actually illegal, but the driver usually gambles that you don’t know how to get where you are going. (the shortest way) So they just take a longer way.
