Do GPS systems include an activation and monthly fee?

Nino B asked:

Just asking because I went to Wal-Mart and saw a GPS system that said no activation or monthly fees so that made me think that the rest of GPS’s that did not say that included those fees. Am I right or wrong?

The only fee associated with any GPS system is to get new maps, if you want or think you need a new map.

Some do and some don’t, depending on the complexity of what they offer.
The standard stand alone navigation system used in a vehicle doesn’t have any additional fees.

There is no fee to use a gps, the government spent tax dollars to put the satellites up in space and to maintain the system so basically you already paid for the service all you need is the receiver (GPS unit) .

Garmin makes the best gps systems (receivers) on the market they were the first to make GPS for the general public after the military declassified it. WAAS (wide area augmentation system) enabled GPS is accurate within 15 feet.

Although if you wanted to ad MSN direct witch will give live traffic updates (where available) and the gps can reroute you around traffic congestion there is a monthly fee for that.

With GARMIN units, map updates are free until the unit is discontinued.
