Do Elliptical Trainers really work?

Hope. Dream. Wish. asked:

Hey i’m 13 years young, 5′2 and 133 pounds. I really want to lose 30 pounds or more. I want to lose it before spring break of next year.. Because i might be going on vacation to Cuba. Anyway, my mom might get me a exercise machine for Christmas! But i’m not sure what to ask for! I would like to get an Elliptical trainer… But do they really work? I would like to get this one, or one that is like this one;

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9252472&sourceid=1500000000000002994080&ci_src=16435691&ci_sku=9252472

Can anyone tell me how they really work to make you burn calories and lose weight? They look like they don’t give much of a workout! And some people tell me that getting a cheaper one, (like the one i want to get from walmart) doesn’t work to help you lose weight! But all elliptical trainers work the same way, weather their cheap or not! So how is that possible? And do all elliptical trainers tell you how many calories you burnt? Thanks VERY VERY VERY much for helping me out, i really appreciate this. :)

    they work for some!! not everyone.. my best advice would be to go to a store where you can actually get on one, and see how it effects your heart rate.. in simple words.. see if you sweat.. if you do, its awesome… if not.. you might wanna consider getting a treadmill instead! if you want to lose quick pounds, a treadmill is the best way to go.. ellipticals are an alternative for people who have hip/knee/joint problems and are unable to run. the reason why prices vary is because of the functions, the stride, and the brand name. not all ellipticals have heart rate monitors, and calorie monitors… you might wanna go to a store and try it out instead of shopping onnline:) goodluck

    elliptical trainers are ok for raising your heart rate and slight toning, but they aren’t the most effective for weight loss…

    with ellipticals you get some degree of momentum going, and so you don’t have to work too hard to keep up the pace… but the nice thing about them is that most enable you to use your upperbody, which you don’t get on bikes or treadmills…

    I’d be wary of that one you gave the link to though… that price seems way too low… the ones at our gym were about $4,000.. clearly you don’t need a gym quality machine, but don’t get one that’s too cheap and just craps out on you…

    you might consider asking for a bike (like an actual bike for riding outdoors), and you could use that along with walking/jogging, swimming, etc…

    If your going to do anything at all on an exercise machine in general, just make sure you up the resistance enough to FEEL it. An important thing to remember is your weight isn’t crucial. This is a number you want to be able to ignore. It’s more about where the weight is in your body. You could weigh the exact same and look fine. Just make sure that you do exercises for all parts of your body, this can be found out easily from a number of sites.

    Also, changing your diet for the better can have a greatly positive impact on your physique and health in general. You have to be trying very hard to get in shape. It isn’t a 5 minute a day thing. You have to be making it harder on yourself consistently (don’t hurt yourself or anything :O) but make sure you are, somehow, improving your physical ability.

    On an entirely different finishing note: try as hard as you can to stop drinking soda. If you’re going to drink it, go get some water as well and then use the sugar. Do ANYTHING to burn it up, but try not to let it sit. (It’s fine occasionally of course, but to drink a 2 liter a day while sitting around would EASILY increase your weight in a bad way)
