Fletcher Mak asked:

If someone walks up to you and tries to explain that DVD player is now a thing of the past, taken him seriously, in fact very seriously! With the advent of powerful optical disk formats like HD DVD (high definition DVD) and Blu-ray Disc the visual media is set to take a generation leap.

Their popularity is soaring with each passing day as they are proliferating into the conscious of the common man through other popular media. Like the Blu-ray Disc is supported by the immensely popular PS3 and even the hugely successful (but controversial) movie ‘Da Vinci Code’ was also released on a Blu-ray Disc! This makes it one of the well known formats amongst the younger generation. But then the HD DVD format isn’t lagging behind by too much.

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 HD DVD player is already making waves in the market for almost a year now and being the cheaper amongst the two; HD DVD Player is preferred by users. Also the portable DVD players are much in demand in the market and quite a few of them support these HD DVD formats that make them all the more attractive to the user.

But if we talk about quality Blu-ray Disc is better by far as it has got a higher numerical aperture, much higher storage capacity (be it single layer or dual) and the data/video transfer rates are substantially higher in the Blu-ray discs as compared to HD DVD player or a normal portable DVD Player.

With top brands like Samsung, Philips, Panasonic, Pioneer, Toshiba and others equipping their DVD players and portable DVD players to support any one of these two highly powerful and advanced disc formats a marketing war between the two brands was almost inevitable. But in the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas, Nevada (USA) in January 2007 Warner Bros introduced Total HD discs, following the footsteps of global electronics giant LG. These highly advanced discs will be compatible with both, HD DVD players and Blu-ray DVD players.

Will this be the end of format war? Well it is a tough call to make, especially when a company like LG (who specialise in making home appliances rather than optical disc formats) decides to do something to douse the fire of format war, it is bound to get very intriguing.

Jayson Pablo asked:

DVD players are quite a rage in amongst the people and they are surely an advanced version of the former technologies that included VHS and CDs. Portable DVD player are the latest versions of the advanced technology that makes you watch all of your favourite movies in the privacy of your home with an impeccable picture quality. DVD players have surely brought a metamorphosis in the movie watching experience. However there are certain points that you must keep in mind while you buy your portable DVD player. Let us discuss them in detail.

You must check the weight of your DVD player including the batteries. Ideally the weight of your DVD player should be less than 2 pounds along with the weight of batteries in it. There are some movies that barely give you two to three hours of battery life that would barely allow you to view one movie along with it. Look up for a DVD player that should at least provide you with a battery backup up for at least 5 hours. The DVD players are available in the various discount schemes that keep on going on and off in the market. So, you must keep an eye on these offers that are available off and on in the market.

There is no need to buy the latest DVD player with a very expensive pricing because the prices of technology fall down very soon and the same model in less than a span of one year is available at a very less price. Also you must avoid the extensive warranties that are available with on certain offers. It is because you can find the drawbacks of your model and can get it repaired for free in a year, which is the normal period of any warranty. And before you can come to use the extended warranty you can easily dispose off the DVD player and buy a new model.

The online market anticipates you with outstretched arms. Buy your favourite portable DVD player.

Micheal Cosmo asked:

Nowadays, you can find people striving to install few such devices and parts in the cars that may make their car more functional and comfortable to drive. For instance, you can find a lot of people going for parking censors to avoid hitting another car. But, it is a fact that most people love to add a DVD player in their car.

Actually, people go for DVD players not only because it offers an entertainment option but also because it adds to the grace and beauty of your car. It adds a special wow factor to your car and that’s the reason why there is a great deal of increase in the popularity of these DVD players.

A problem to deal with:

While it is a great thing that there are so many types of DVD players available different price for people to choose according to their budget constraints, it can also become confusing to choose from several options. To avoid getting in this problem of choosing one amongst the many, consider following option at the time of shopping for car DVD players.

Ceiling Mount DVD Player:

This is arguably the best option for those who don’t have a lot of money to spend on DVD players. What it means is that the best feature of these types of players is their cost effectiveness. You can easily get few of these DVD players between the range of $500 and $700.

Apart from price, there are several other features to brag about. One of its features is that it doesn’t take a lot of space in your car. In fact, you can fold it to create even more space. So, you can always consider this particular option if you don’t want to lose space in your car. Though it is a good player as a whole but you will have to call in a specialist to install it in your car. That’s one of the points where you can not compare it to the portable DVD players.

If you are looking something for backseat viewing, the best option is to go for headrest monitors. The best thing about these monitors is that you can actually get an amazing result even in the daylight. It is however crucial to mention that you may have to do some splicing to your upholstery. But, if you don’t want to do it, you can also choose another option which is about using headrest bracket mounts.

The fact of the matter is that if you wan to provide your kids with a great deal of fun while sitting in the car, you must consider the aforementioned option. Although the aforementioned option is a perfect for all but you must always spend some time in checking other models and types of players. This will really help especially if you have some prior knowledge about DVD players.

Alden Jerry asked:

Though watching your favourite movies on the move is surely a stress and strain buster. However, you cannot carry a complete home theatre system while on a business or fun trip. Watching a movie while traveling can easily make the miles go zoom.

Now the question arises that how to make it possible and how to watch your favourite DVDs while on the move? The answer is quite simple, the Portable DVD Players can take your boredom away and they can also lead you to a great land of entertainment and joy. These players not only provide the facility to play your favourite DVDs but they also serve the facilities of listening to your favourite music. With such players you can also show a presentation to your clients and thus, you do not have to carry a laptop on your business trip.

As with most technologies, the concept of “getting what you pay for” has been applied on such portable players of DVD as well. Do not ever get confused with the prices of such devices. Most of the times, the companies launch a feature laden machine and that too on rock bottom price but be always beware of such companies as it may be possible that you get a junk in the form of a DVD player. Always go for a branded piece so that you never have to worry about your leisure times. There are various websites available on the Internet that is providing great players at cheap prices. You can also avail branded but cheap DVD players from such websites.

There are various facts that you should always keep in your mind before buying a portable player for you. Consider all possible buying and research criteria and please ignore the media hypes made about any product. Some of the possible facts are stated below:

* The Life of Battery: This is really a big issue for the constant travelers and this should not be taken as grated as this may spoil the enjoyment of your trip. Always go for at least two hours of battery life in a video playback mode. There are various players that give the backup of upto four hours.

* Car Kit: If you are planning to use your DVD player in the car, then you should purchase a player that includes a car adapter. To avail maximum convenience, go for a tablet model with the facility of wall mounting system that will attach your player on the back of the front seats. You can easily choose where to install that player.

* Format Support: Your player is made to support standard DVDs that run MPEG-2 files, but you should also look for some other formats like MPEG-4 ASP (Advanced Simple Profile), WMV9 (Windows Media Video 9), DivX, and XviD. Support for CDs and MP3s could turn your video player into a jukebox. If you burn CDs or DVDs, make sure your player supports writeable (CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD-R.

* Output Jacks: Practically all DVD players can plug into a PC or TV for large-screen playback. However, high-quality outputs like S-Video for video or Optical Out for audio will give better playback quality.

* Screen Orientation: The more clarity in pictures, the better. A 7-inch screen is normal with many players, but a 10-inch screen makes viewing more pleasurable. If you use the player in group surroundings, a swivel screen will ensure that everyone gets a view.

* Sound Control: You won’t always be using headphones, so check the sound quality of the player’s built-in speakers. The good stereo quality is a must. Make sure you can add peripheral speakers. You may also need a small duo for business presentations.

* Weight: If you love to travel with less baggage, check the weight of any player you consider to buy. Anything heavier than 5 pounds can feel like a block after awhile. Don’t be confused by size either. Some of the less-weight players have overweight batteries.

There are various companies that are making great portable DVD players, but Sony portable DVD players are among the best players one can have.

David Fishman asked:

As many electronics devices get less expensive and mp3 players are now starting to support video, portable DVD players are getting less and less expensive. Software DVD players are programs that allow users to view DVD videos on a computer with a DVD-ROM drive. DVD players are so good at playing music CDs that you’ll no longer need a separate CD player. Virtually all new DVD players are progressive-scan models. The DVD players are code free out of the box, there is no complicated setup necessary. Lets take a look at both Blu-ray and HD-DVD players, they both are compatible with the HDDVD and standard DVD as well as CDs. HDDVD players are becoming very popular, one important reason is that HDDVD fit the format of the new HDTV and you do not need to readjust your screen for full or widescreen, the picture is also a lot sharper than the older DVDs. Remember not all DVD Players are the same.

Portable DVD players are growing in popularity with passengers who want to make sure that they get to see the movies they want while on board a flight. Today portable DVD players come with widescreens and are create to watch on a plane, train or car. With the invention of portable dvd players, long airline flights and extended car trips have become much easier to take. Bring all your electronic devices with you when you get them portable. Portable video players are getting smaller, more lightweight, and at the same time, more advanced. If your minivan does not come equipped with a DVD player, they are now making portable players that will install easily into any vehicle. There are so many electronic devices out there that are able to play digital video these days here are some of them portable DVD players, PDAs and laptops.. Portable DVD players give people the freedom to take their entertainment with them wherever they go. When it comes to portable DVD players, users tend to focus only on the size of the monitor, the image quality, or the number of available media.

As far as image quality is concerned, the experts seem to be evenly split. Using higher values may improve the quality, but will make the video incompatible with many set-top DVD players. These players contribute high-quality video, often with lots of extra material. DVD players have a sharp, widescreen picture and they also provide CD-quality sound, DVD players are important if you want to get the home theater experience. Unfortunately, quality universal players are less easily found. The high-quality sound available on DVDs is one of the reasons DVD players are so popular for home use. DVD is gaining tremendous popularity with its high-quality video and high-storage capability. The latest TVs feature digital video inputs for very high quality connections to new DVD players and future high-definition devices.

A disadvantage of Blu-ray format is that other DVD players are not able read the discs. Consequently, normal USA DVD players are built only to play Region 1 DVDs, and will not play DVDs from other Regions. Similarly DVD players are encoded with a specific Region as a condition of manufacture, dictated by the Patent Holders. It seems as though most manufacturers of DVD players are only half-heartedly embracing the inclusion of region codes on their machines. Many current DVD players are compatible with many formats, some include DVD-R and CD. Whether you have a family, travel with friends on the road, or just want to be noticed on the streets, car DVD players are the way to go. Portable DVD players are an excellent way for you to entertain the kids on a long trip or keep yourself occupied when you’re traveling via plane or train.

Richard Adams asked:

When the DVD player first came out it was designed exclusively as a home entertainment system that was not intended as a portable item. In fact, the early DVD players came with plastic plugs designed to keep the DVD’s internal component in place when transporting the player. (This was done to avoid damage to the interior components) There was, however, much rejoicing when laptops developed the ability to play DVDs because now an easily portable DVD player existed. However, and the DVD drive was a fringe benefit to owning a computer. If you did not have $1500 for a laptop or a need for a laptop this really wasn’t an option. Then, along came the very cool portable DVD player that can be taken anywhere and it often is.

However, selecting a portable DVD player is not as easy as it looks. If you look at the various DVD players on the market you will notice that there are a number of name brands and prices. This would definitely lead to a little confusion on the part of the consumer as to which portable DVD to purchase. Well, this is only a minor hurdle because it is not difficult to select a portable DVD player provided you examine certain criteria.

Probably the most basic area to take into consideration is the size of the DVD player which ties into the size of the player’s screen. If you spend a lot of time riding coach on airplanes you probably won’t have all the much room for an oversized DVD player. In this case, a seven inch screen becomes the right option. If you want to keep the DVD player in your suitcase and only use it in your hotel room then a ten inch screen becomes a better option. So, always take into consideration the size of the screen relative to your use of the player into consideration before making a purchase.

And speaking of screens some screens is better than others. If you are a stickler for crystal clear picture quality then you may wish to purchase a portable DVD player that possesses an LCD screen. Of course, LCD screens may be quite expensive so if they are out of your budget there are a number of excellent “standard” screens that are quite nice as well.

Now, no matter what size screen you have or how clear the screen is it will be utterly worthless if it doesn’t play the DVD. That is, there are a number of different types of DVDs that some DVD players can’t play. For example, some players are unable to play DVD-R’s or DVD-R/W’s and if you possess a number of these types of DVDs then you will certainly want a DVD player that can handle these formats. As such, when you purchase a portable DVD player it is critical to read the box it comes in and look for the section that defines the formats the DVD player is compatible.

It is always best to perform a little research prior to shopping. This way you will already have a heads up in regard to which name brands are top of the line and which name brands are best avoided. Thankfully, there are a number of excellent consumer electronics review magazines that can greatly aid in this role and make your selection process a little easier.

As you can see, selecting a portable DVD player is no where near as tough as some would be lead to believe. All it takes is a little patience and due diligence and you can find the perfect player for your needs.
