Jason asked:

I bought a brand new PS3 and i’m thinking of taking it back because my friend said that blu ray players are gonna get cheaper in the future. Is he right? or should i just keep it.

Like anything else, blu-ray players will come down in price. However, right now, the (40GB) PS3 is considered one of the best, and inexpensive blu-ray players on the market.

This will likely be the case for at least another year, however in 2009, I wouldn’t be surprised to see blu-ray players for $150-200 and the PS3 will still be at $250-300.

Of course, a blu-ray player can’t play PS3 games like the PS3 can, so that’s also an added advantage of the PS3.

Blu-Ray will ultimately get cheaper, but it will take a long time.

The newest blu-ray profile 2.0 players won’t be out untill at least May, if not later. Those players will be the ones worth getting since they’ll have all of the features for Blu-Ray and not just some, like all of the current players on the market. Blu-Ray 2.0 players are supposedly going to be around $600 at launch.

Your PS3 however can be updated to the new 2.0 profile by simply a firmware update.

Blu-Ray is considerably more expensive to manufacture than its former competitor HD DVD, making it a lot harder to make final spec players at a lower price.

keep the ps3! if you buy a stand alone player now you will not be able to update it to the new 2.0 profile because none of the stand alone players have internet access. PS3 is the only player on the market right now that could support profile 2.0 when it gets released in the near future. The ps3 is the most future proof of all the blu ray players right now due to the fact that you can update the players firmware via the internet connection.

of course they will get cheaper, every consumer electronics product gets cheaper at some point! Look at DVD players, 10 years ago I spent $300 on a player, now you can get them for $20. I wouldnt return your PS3, its not like the price will drop $100 on a couple weeks. It will gradually go down in price as newer equipment becomes available. The new players will still be expensive, and the old ones go down in price, but you will probably still want the newer models. That is just how the industry works.

yes, anything that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels gets cheaper. anything that does gets more expensive. it’s cheaper to buy a dvd player than it is to fill up a tank of petrol, but do you think they lower the price of alchohol…

seriously though.. keep it, buy games, play games, watch bluray movies, watch regular dvd’s, hell the ps3 is brilliant right now. will be better in about 6 months and will be crap when the next generation consoles come out.

They will HAVE TO if Sony wants to establish BR as a mainstream product and make a dent in the standard DVD market. BR players are still completely overpriced.
